Today, the Government’s Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced that they will be launching a full national inquiry in England and Wales into rape gangs. It follows a vote that took place in January of this year, where local Members of Parliament voted against a national inquiry.
Baroness Casey concluded her audit this week which recommended to the Government that a national inquiry is required. Her audit was looking into the data and evidence on the nature and scale of group-based child sexual abuse.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has accepted the recommendations and announced that there will be a national inquiry, prompting Ashfield MP Lee Anderson to take to social media and expose those who tried to stop the inquiry.
He posted a ‘List of Shame’ which included the names of MPs that voted against having a national inquiry into grooming gangs. The list included local Labour Members of Parliament, Steve Yemm (Mansfield), Natalie Fleet (Bolsover), Michelle Welsh (Sherwood Forest), Michael Payne (Gedling), Juliet Campbell (Broxtowe), James Naish (Rushcliffe), Jo White (Bassetlaw), Lilian Greenwood (Nottingham South), and Nadia Whittome (Nottingham East).
Lee Anderson MP said:
“These MPs should hang their heads in shame for trying to prevent a full national inquiry into the Pakistani Male Rape Gang Scandal.
“Each of these MPs now need to explain to their constituents why they did this, because they deserve an answer.”
“Their residents will never forget their betrayal.”
