Kirkby North Councillor Simon Wright: My New Cabinet Role.

I’m so grateful to be offered the opportunity to be the Cabinet Member for Education and SEND for Nottinghamshire County Council. Anyone who knows me is aware I’m a parent of a 32 year old son with severe learning disabilities and over that period my wife and I have battled the very system I’m now responsible for. Our battles back then in the 90’s were very different with a serious lack of understanding from the system, professionals and sometimes friends and family. A lonely place at times.
The love of your child can make you move mountains and my wife and I did. All because we wanted the best opportunities for our son and we will still do today.
A recent video of me in my new role became political and I have been criticised saying I have no idea or experience and as a Reform UK County Councillor even my disabled son has been labelled a Deformer. That’s how vile some opposition people are, they are cowards at times.
In my new role I bring a parent’s understanding and especially empathy.
Nottinghamshire County Council also has some outstanding individuals and over the past months new leaders are making positive changes in a very challenging environment. So for anyone in Nottinghamshire having issues in this area, please contact your local county councillor and copy me in. I’m happy to work with any political party because our children must come before politics.
