Today I had the opportunity to visit Five Gables Care Home on Victoria Road in Kirkby in Ashfield alongside The Baroness Casey Commission.

This commission is a cross-party independent review commission focused on examining the state of adult social care across Britain. As part of their work, they have been spending time with an MP from each political party, and I was pleased to represent Reform UK by showing them one of the care homes in my constituency of Ashfield.
It was a delight to once again meet the hard-working staff and the wonderful residents at this fantastic care home.
The commission has highlighted a number of challenges facing the adult social care system. There appears to be a widespread confusion surrounding the sector as a whole. Many families are left to navigate a complex and often overwhelming system on their own, without sufficient guidance or support. Many people do not fully understand what social care actually is, how it works, or even that they would be required to pay for it.
Also at present, the system relies far too heavily on low-paid staff, many of whom are undervalued despite the vital role they play in the everyday lives of our elderly and vulnerable.
The adult social care sector is currently lacking a coherent national plan, which is essential to ensure long-term sustainability. The system is fragmented and overly complicated, particularly due to the split in responsibilities between the NHS and local authorities. A simplified approach is what is needed.
Adult social care needs a single, unified funding stream to improve efficiency and stop gaps in provision. Additionally, more investment is needed to ensure that elderly and vulnerable people can live with the dignity, respect, and quality of life they deserve.
There is also a pressing need to provide better training opportunities, and create clearer career pathways within social care. By doing so, we can attract and retain the skilled, professional workers in the sector.
