The new Reform UK County Councillor for Sutton Central & East who was elected in May 2025, Cllr Joseph Rich, has provided an update regarding the state of the roads in Ashfield.

After years of neglect from Ashfield Independent Councillors in Ashfield, Residents know how frustrating the state of our roads can be. Potholes and crumbling surfaces aren't just an inconvenience; they're a real safety concern.
Cllr Joseph Rich said:
"Here in Nottinghamshire, we know our roads have been neglected for far too long, and residents deserve better. Under Reform UK, we are committed to tackling this issue head-on. We are undertaking a comprehensive "efficiency review" across all council departments. This isn't about making cuts that harm services; it's about ensuring we get the absolute best value for every taxpayer's pound."
"We will scrutinise existing contracts and look for better, more effective ways to deliver road maintenance. We believe we can achieve more with the resources we have by ensuring maximum efficiency and accountability."
"We will demand higher standards from those responsible for our road repairs, ensuring the work is done right the first time."
Whilst this work in ongoing, Cllr Rich shared the summer plans for road maintenance works:
"his vital work is a key part of our highways maintenance strategy, designed to seal roads, prevent water damage, reduce potholes, and extend the life of our road network by up to seven years."
"We're planning works on 32 roads across the county in the coming weeks, including key routes such as the A38, A60, A614, A616, and A617. Roads will be closed for short periods, usually just a few hours, while treatment is carried out. Modern techniques mean traffic can return to the road almost at once, and any loose chippings will be swept up afterwards. Road markings and studs will also be reinstated promptly."
"I understand that roadworks can cause some disruption, and I appreciate your patience as we carry out these essential improvements. Please remember that works are weather-dependent and may be subject to short-notice changes. I strongly advise checking the dedicated webpage for the latest updates on estimated treatment dates and schedules:
Specifically for our area, the A38 Kings Mill Road East in Sutton-in-Ashfield is currently targeted for surface dressing on 11th August, with schemes aimed to close out on 28th August. Please be aware that weather and unforeseen operational issues may impact these works."
"Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve our local roads!"
